It could be that you're allergic to a different component in the shrimp than most people are, which could be why whole shrimp came back positive but the specific component was negative.  Kind of like how people with PA can be reacting to different components of peanut.

I've had both positives and negatives on blood and skin tests that were wrong.

Thanks Janielle, that is what I was thinking and why I want to ask my allergist for the ISAC test, it seems to test more shrimp components.

I guess I am secretly hoping it is not true. I developed the allergy when I was 60 (I am 62 now) and I hate living with this fear that is always there and how it turned my world upside down in many ways. I guess it just wishful thinking on my part. But those whole body hives spoke volumes.

Thank you for your input Macabre.

The component test DS had was an ISAC test. It was for peanut. I'm glad we did it. I haven't heard of others here using that one. But it's what our doctor uses.

Weird stuff happens with allergy tests all the time - they just aren't that reliable.  It could be that you're allergic to a different component in the shrimp than most people are, which could be why whole shrimp came back positive but the specific component was negative.  Kind of like how people with PA can be reacting to different components of peanut.

Have you reacted to shrimp?  Are you going to avoid it regardless, or are you considering a challenge?  I ask only because if it isn't going to change anything, I personally wouldn't keep testing.

Yes I avoid it. I had a severe reaction when I ate 1 shrimp (my dinner was too spicy for me so gave it to my husband), body hives from head to toe and everything in between. I am not considering a challenge.

The reason why I am curious about having more or different tests is the component for the protein came back normal, but the other allergy tests came back positive for it.

But you make a good point since it wont change anything. I just don't understand why the component would come back with a normal result.

I myself have no idea, but have you spoken about this with your allergist?  What did he/she say/recommend?

Hi everyone,
I have tested positive for shrimp, dust mites and cockroaches, with ImmunoCAP Specific IgE testing so I took the phadia component test about 2 years ago and it came back normal for the shrimp protein component. But positive for the Complete Allergen

Shrimp Component Package
f351 rPen a 1 Tropomyosin, Shrimp
f24 Shrimp (Complete Allergen)

I would like your opinions if it is worth my while to take the ImmunoCAP ISAC, I do not know much about the test, and please explain how this test differs from the component test. When I looked at the catalog on phadia's site it seems it tests for more than that 1 shrimp protein that the component test tested for.
The ISAC listed this as part of the test:
Allergen Component
rAni s 3 Anisakis
nBla g 7 Cockroach
rDer p 10 House dust mite
rPen a 1 Shrimp
nPen i 1 Shrimp
nPen m 1 Shrimp

Thank you
