Don't forget about tocopherols and Vitamin E.

I've had a terrible allergy to sunflower for 8 years and I am still finding sneaky ways companies add sunflower to their ingredients and don't label it appropriately.Vitamin E is also derived from sunflowers. Not all Vita E but more often than not, and it's not labeled on the ingredients list. Maybe most already figured that out but it was news to me. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the board!  :bye:

I think I've read about some make ups that do contain sunflower, but I don't know them off the top, of my head. You might try searching through this section for it. Tomorrow when I have a real computer in front of me (instead of just my phone), I'll look and see if I can find something unless someone beats me to it. I know we have a few members with severe sunflower allergy, so hopefully they'll see this and chime in as well.

Be cautious of safflower, too. It's a similar Asian plant to sunflower. I now have reactions to it.

Coffee Crisp chocolate bars contain sunflower oil as do many steak spices. I can't eat pizzaville pizza as they make oven baked chicken wings that contain sunflower oil, then they slide a pizza pie in to the oven, it soaks up the sunflower oil.

I developed an allergy to sunflower seeds/oil recently and thought I'd pass along the unexpected places where sunflower seeds/oils may be found:

- Wheat breads/baked goods
- Breadcrumbs!  Progresso breadcrumbs list sunflower seeds as an ingredient.  Panko breadcrumbs might be ok.
- Deli meats (in the marinade)
- 'DATEM' (diacetyl tartaric acid ester of mono- and diglycerides) is in mini-moo creamers and cream added to coffee by places like Dunkin' Donuts and McDonalds
- Dried fruits and cereals with dried fruits
- all chips and pretzels except Cape Cod chips- supposedly made with canola oil.  I haven't tried them yet, though.
- I don't trust labels that say vegetable oil (canola, safflower, cottonseed ...) because I think I have had reactions to these products. But I am still sorting things out.

I'll keep posting if I discover more.

Thanks for posting the list. It seems that 'sunflower oil' and it's deriviates go by different names depending on whether their in foods, cosmetics, perfumes etc. Would be really grateful if anyone could post any other terms they come across that manufacturers use

Hi the ONLY way to tell where it comes from if it says mono or di etc is to phone the manufacturer. 'Vegetable oil' as something that you always avoid will restrict you tremendously! Its always important to avoid it if you dont know the source....BUT if you call the manufacturer then you may find that there are many things that you can eat that you would have otherwise avoided.
good luck

Does anyone worry about mono or diglycerides? I was recently diagnosed with sunflower allergy, and am wondering how extreme I need to be.
All the allergist told me was to avoid sunflower seeds and oil. I know to avoid 'vegetable oil', but I learned that mono-diglycerides are derived from these substances... Any thoughts?

FYI - When I talked with them, the tube ones are likely made on shared lines with nuts and sunflower oil. They don't own the plant for filling them, so they hire another company to do it. They have no way of knowing what ingredients the other company uses.

On the plus side, the ones in the tin are no on shared lines  :)

QuoteThis is a great reference. I was ( unpleasantly) surprised to find that sunflower oil is in nearly ALL of the lip balms that I looked at from my son the other day (he has just started having swollen lips from the pawpaw ointment he has used for years-turns out its very allergenic!).
The more 'natural' the brand the worse they seemed to be (sunflower oil plus other seed oils including nut oils etc).
My son has very frequent epipodes of lip swelling which once the swelling  abates, his lips basically peel and become very cracked (its then a vicious cycle with lip swelling to things he would other wise eat without problem).
cheers

I've had fantastic luck with Badger lipbalms. If you can't find those locally, you can order 'em online; no nut or seed oils: http://www.badgerbalm.com/
