Not for the quality of the shrimp themselves but I've seen boxes of coconut shrimp (i.e., prepared shrimp) product of Thailand so I'd be curious how the end retailer in USA working in an office knows anything going on currently in a manufacturing plant on another continent with potential language barrier.

Most shrimp is going to be imported but if it arrives here as plain shrimp but is then used to make a prepared item/meal then it is considered a domestic product. Frozen bags of U 30-50/60 raw, headless, deveined are most likely as safe as any shrimp you're going to get. It'll probably be best quality and price, too. Anything you buy in bulk at the seafood counter is the same stuff, defrosted.

I used to stir fry them with fresh garlic, wine, a bit of hot pepper flake, touch of sugar, salt and add slivered green onion at the end. High, high heat always shell on for full flavor. What are you going to make? I wonder if it's too much too hope we can still eat shellfish.

Just plain shrimp right now, without the heads, I think. I don't want to devein or decapitate or anything. I want it mostly for main dish recipes. Is imported from Thailand bad?

I did hear back from Harvest of the Sea and the plain and cooked shrimp are processed in a nut free facility. They're checking on their other products for me.

Jessica, are you looking for frozen prepared meal items with shrimp or plain shrimp? Next time you see something that catches your eye can you look for the country of origin on the package? A lot of it shrimp is imported from Thailand at least in the U 30-60 size.

I'm assuming you're not interested in the big guys with head still on or the pressed straightened type for sushi making, and not the super tiny shrimp meat for cold salad.

I'll ask my family as my input is regrettably sparse. They buy frozen shrimp regularly for family gatherings ( :hiding:)

Well I'm an idiot. Orca Bay doesn't even have shrimp. I probably wrote the name down for the fish. So now I need to get ahold of Harvest of the Sea. I emailed them twice and they never replied. Another company that I've seen around here is Sail brand. So I might call them too. I have never seen star-fish brand - we don't have a whole foods or any other shop like that.

I have not used this brand but it has my interest because of the GF status
http://star-fish.com/

It says free of wheat, egg, soy, milk and peanuts - it does not list tree nuts but am wondering if it's because of coconut.  I have not called to ask.

And it's only available at Whole Foods and other specialty shops.

But I thought I would throw it out there for anyone who needed it.

Looking for a safe brand. I emailed Orca Bay and all they would say is that they use approved cleaning and testing methods between runs.

eta: They emailed me back and said the only tree nut they use in any of their products is coconut. So that's fine for us.
