Title: Personal Hygiene Labeling laws?
Post by: gufyduck on September 23, 2012, 10:18:12 PM
Does anyone know the laws regarding personal hygiene products?  Are they required to label for top 8?  I was given a sample of a shave oil where the label seemed very suspicious, claiming a proprietary blend of oils.  I emailed the company, and was told it blatantly contains nut and seed oils, but even then they did not tell me which ones.  Anyone know?

I do not, but can you share which shaving oil it is so others with nut allergies know to avoid it? Thanks

The labeling laws in the US only pertain to food products (and not all, meats fall into another category and can be problematic to find information on).

Shared lines and facilities and may contains on food are voluntary by company.  Nut oils are at the discretion of the company because the FDA doesn't consider them to have enough protein to cause a reaction (which is why Edy's/Dryers can label a product as peanut free even with peanut oil).

It does not pertain to medicines, supplements, personal hygeine, sponges, cleaning products etc.

In Canada, only food (and non-alcoholic drinks) require top allergens to be listed if they are an actual added ingredient.  (May contain is not required by law.)  Things like make-up etc., are NOT required to list even if a top allergen is actually added.

That is truly frightening!  I *think* they even said cold pressed but and seed oils. I will have to see if I can find the sample of the shave oil  or the email on my computer to share the name. I really wish I had this to share. I am so disturbed by this. Normally lotions are at least well labeled for contains.

Yeah, your only real defense if you have life threatening allergies is to ONLY use those products which are labeled with full ingredients.
