Title: How long after a failed challenge for a re-challenge?
Post by: daisy madness on December 20, 2014, 09:05:45 AM
If one were to fail a food challenge, how long would it be before a doctor would consider doing another challenge to that same allergen?  I assume this varies from patient to patient and doctor to doctor.  I'm just wondering if there is some sort of official AAAAI guideline of having to wait x number of months or years after a failed challenge before it is prudent to do another challenge?

This is assuming the immunocap number is fairly low and it was fairly low at the time of the failed challenge.

One of our members here who I think goes to one of the gurus dealt with this--or is in the process.  I may be misrepresenting her situation, but her two kids had a pizza cheese challenge and failed--last year. And I think in the next year they may try it again.

I may be wrong about the details, but that's what I'm thinking.

Ok.  Thanks.  He failed 15 months ago.  I have no reason to think he has outgrown.  I will not be re-challenging unless the allergist recommends it.
We may be finding ourselves in a situation where certain people who have no business inserting themselves into his medical care may be asking for a re-challenge.  I was hoping to be able to provide a medical reference of some kind stating that "after a failed food challenge, it is contraindicated to re-challenge for that sane allergen before x amount of time."
If his numbers haven't changed, you can always blame it on the allergist.  "His numbers haven't gone down, so our doctor says there's no reason to retest after a failed challenge unless they do."  Just a thought, if you feel you need more ammunition.
