Does anyone know of any issues with contrast, anesthesia and/or Xanax/Ativan used during pediatric MRIs?

My DS allergies are to peanut, tree nut, legume, and sesame.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

When DS was little, there was an anesthesia (somewhat less sedating if I remember correctly) he couldn't have because of egg and soy allergy.  That was about 15 years ago, so I can't remember the name.  It would have been the anesthesiologist's first choice, but he was able to use something else instead.

ETA:  Just Googled and I'm assuming it was propofol he couldn't use.  http://www.ucdmc.ucdavis.edu/anesthesiology/images/residents/WARC_2011/Heather_WARC_web.pdf

DS - peanut, tree nut, milk, eggs, corn, soy, several meds, many environmentals. Finally back on Xolair!
DD - mystery anaphylaxis, shellfish.
DH - banana/avocado, aspirin.  Asthma.
Me - peanut, tree nut, shellfish, banana/avocado/latex,  some meds.

Contrast dyes have historically been contraindicated for people with a shellfish allergy, but that's not the real issue. The issue, from what I've seen is really that it has a high histamine level in general. I will say that I had a five day reaction to it that was not immediate. I had full body hives that arrived after I left the facility, though I did feel spacey once it hit me during the procedure (one of my reactions). I will say that my shellfish reactuons do happen two hours later.

So--I don't know if it was a histamine reaponse or shellfish. But I assume it was the former. I have heard that people with a history of problems can take a prophylactic dose of something beforehand. I'm not sure if that is an antihistamine or pred.

DS is allergic to milk, eggs, peanuts and salmon.  He did fine with the contrast for a CT.  There was a sedative they couldn't use (I think due to the egg allergy) but he ended up not needing a sedative at all anyway.  I know that doesn't exactly answer your question, but I thought I'd chime in just in case there's something useful in there.

Thank you so much for letting me know about your experiences. This is all very good information to have when speaking with the anesthesiologist before the procedure.

I don't know what we'd do without this board. You all are my " go to" whenever I need reliable answers.

Thanks again!
