QsMommy

Hi,

We are heading to Lake Placid this week to hike.

Anyone have suggestions on allergy aware restaurants in the area.

Thanks,

I haven't been to Lake Placid itself in a very long time but I'm from that general area. Are you visiting from out of state? from the city? If no specific suggestions come up I can at least help you get a sense of the area.

QsMommy

Thanks twinturbo,

We are driving down from Toronto, ON.   Crossing at Ogdensburg NY.

Planning to do a few days of hiking around Lake Placid area.

We are trying to avoid the usual fast food type places, but will resort to that if needed.

Is that the direct destination? Toronto to Lake Placid no stops in between? Hope you've made your peace with Quebecers.

Just FYI, after looking at the medical system current state of affairs in that area, there's no big regional hospitals there. I'd try Champlain Valley PH first and then Albany but Burlington is another choice closer than Albany.

One strategy I'm thinking of is if none of the eateries are looking accommodating in the main area of Lake Placid to branch out into nearby Saranac Lake.

QsMommy

Yes, direct with only lunch and coffee breaks.

We are thinking 5-6 hours driving, plus stops.

Good to know about medical system :-(

How close is Saranac Lake?

Saranac Lake (as opposed to Saranac which is in a different county) is probably a little outside town. The Lake Placid dining guide lists restaurants that are actually in Saranac Lake. I'm sure much has changed since I went to Lake Placid but there's not much more around there in terms of towns and employment. What used to support a lot of developmemt in the area of NY, NH and Maine were military bases, which included hospitals. Many of those were closed in the 1990s and thereafter converted to civilian use. Meaning, what industries were supported by the number of military personnel dried up when the bases closed with more remote areas being harder hit.

I think Lake Placid is still very strong in diversified sporting events some of the family friends from Massachusetts head there for national events. It's also a good central resting point for Adirondack sightseeing like you're doing.

Med isn't bad there but in talking to my dad last week about the hospitals there he said a lot had to head across to Burlington due to hospital size. I wouldn't worry more necessarily but knowing your options beforehand isn't a bad idea.

Is anyone else upstate, FAS?
