Hey Everyone - just stopping in to say hi and remind everyone its flu shot season.

I thought of you this week when I started seeing pharmacies in the area promoting the arrival of flu vaccine.

I will get mine at work, as always.  And I will harrass my DH and kids to get theirs too - younger DS at the student health service at school.

Hi,  they seem to be a bit later up here.  Though this year, I'm going to see if my husband can be fast-tracked.

I will get DS's around his birthday ( early Oct), as I do every year.  And I will get my own.  But this year I think DD will do without.  She is now 18 and is hundreds of miles away.  Not much I can do to make her get it, and she does not want it.  She HATES needles of any kind.

No, not much you can do... except pointing out that a college campus virtually guarantees exposure-- and that she doesn't have YOU to help her if she's sick... and that she can probably not really afford to miss two weeks of class.

All the college profs I know get them annually.  Almost religiously so.


DH and I will get ours in the next two weeks.  DD... probably still has to get hers at the allergist's office.  I'll call today and find out.

Yeah, already had that talk.  Multiple times.  The only way she will change her mind, I think, is if she sees other students come down with it, and decides it is worth the needle.  But even that is unlikely.

Could she get a flumist one instead?  The nasal route is a lot better for needle-phobics.

The college campus that I went to offered them for free as well.  I remember that one year when there was a shortage they contacted 'high risk' students to come earlier than they allowed the other students and staff to get them.  When I got my priority shot, the nurses told me not to tell anyone that I had gotten one, because apparently a few of the professors were ticked that they had prioritized their supply.

We'll get our flu shots at the beginning of October on the recommendation of our primary care doc.

That is what we used to do.  Then about a year ago, she started wheezing and having trouble catching her breath when she ran.  Apparently excel use-induced asthma.  So no flu mist for her.

Okay, but... logically,

if she's asthmatic, then she's high risk ON TOP of being high risk by virtue of being on a college campus, yes?

So if she's going to follow advice re: FluMist, then she sure ought to follow it re: asthma.  (I know, I know-- nothing you haven't already pointed out to her... just... would her doc tell you if s/he thought the risk was higher re:  FluMist or nothing at all?)
