On Oct. 2, Justin Mathews went to work at the Rossdale fire station. He was there to test the air quality because another company had just been inside sandblasting old lead paint off the walls.

His family said he was inside the building for about 20 minutes when he started having trouble breathing, walked outside and collapsed

Elijah Hawthorne 3 years old - November 3, 2017

On November 3rd, 2017, our beloved Elijah was playing peacefully at his pre-k in Harlem, NYC, when he was given a grilled cheese sandwich by an adult at the pre-k, despite them knowing and having documented that he has a severe allergy to dairy. Elijah went into anaphylactic shock and was taken to the Pediatric ER at Harlem Hospital, where, tragically, they were unable to save him. Elijah leaves behind his heartbroken mother, Dina, father, Thomas, and his 5-year-old brother Sebastian, as well as dozens of friends and family members who all mourn the loss of his precious young life. Elijah was three years old.

Wow this brings me back to when DS was little and anaphylactic to dairy. I was so fortunate to find a preschool that worked so hard with us to eliminate risk and keep his allergens out of the classroom. I was just thinking of the preschool director the other day and then this story broke. I should really write her a note.

This quote actually made me angry:

On Wednesday night, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said it is "closing the Center for Family Services and continuing to aggressively investigate what happened and whether the facility could have done something differently to prevent this tragedy."

Really? Could they have just not given him a sandwich full of his allergen? How much investigating to figure that out?

Maybe they need to check if they could have done something after the fact, like get him his epinephrine faster or call an ambulance faster. But, don't feed children a food they are allergic to shouldn't take much investigating.

This is a huge story here in NY right now.  Horrible that it happened at all, but I'm glad it's getting so much attention.

Apparently, his epipens malfunctioned. I have chills right now. He was 14. Made a mistake, ate a cookie without knowing ingredients.
