Dairy Challenge next week

I posted back in May that our allergist wanted DS to do a dairy challenge.  I cannot believe that it is next week.  On Wednesday morning DH will take DS.  I have to get DD to camp and then I will head over.  I am trying to remain calm.  He is very excited and I have to remind him that he may not pass.  We are trying not to get our hopes up.  It's very hard not to because life without a dairy allergy would be so amazing.  Anyway, prayers, thoughts and encouragement are welcome!  I am struggling with this because I had a severe (Ana) reaction to peanuts in my 20s.  It's hard to have first hand knowledge of how it feels, that impending sense of doom, etc.  I considered not even going to the challenge but I know that I should be there and that DS wants me to be there.

BIG, deep breaths.

If it helps-- I've approached challenges with the notion that DD will probably 'fail' and that our goal is to "find out how much" it takes to cause that to happen.  Then a pass is a nice surprise.  (Hey, the little tricks I play work just fine for my mind... and it keeps me sane, because otherwise I'd be asking myself those 'crazy' questions...)

Remind yourself that, win or lose, you'll get information.  Information which is GOOD to have.

Thanks everyone!  CM - I hadn't thought about it like that!  Thank you.

Before bed last night DS told me that he is nervous about Wednesday.  We've been talking about it quite a bit and he has been excited. I guess the reality is sinking in now that it is in 2 days.

Thanks Shosh.  Good to see you here!  Hope you are doing well.
DS passed the challenge but got hives in his chin after ice cream at home the next day.  He is bummed, I'm devastated.  We are going to try baked dairy.

Mary, do think that this means that he's likely to tolerate traces pretty well, though?  At least that would be something to have gotten out of doing the challenge.

I know that many people who have failed peanut or egg challenges find that the amount needed is surprisingly high, which actually (once the disappointment wears off) is pretty comforting.

Being given a "pass" and then having it turn out to be a fail, though-- that is just rotten.

I've been thinking about you this morning.  :console:

CM - I think he would definitely tolerate traces.  He had 3 1/2 spoonfuls yesterday and got hives (small ones) on his chin.  He didn't even really notice them.  Our pediatrician (who I took him to yesterday after the reaction) really encouraged us to do baked dairy.  I may call and leave a message for the allergist - his nurse told me no more dairy for now.  I'm confused but my gut says to try baked dairy.  DS seems totally fine & happy today.  Yesterday there were tears then he was very stoic & then more tears.  Thankfully we were able to go to a friends house & he had a great time.

I'm sorry for the disappointment, MaryM.  But it does sound like baked milk would be possible.    :grouphug:

Both kids are scheduled for a baked dairy challenge at Mt. Sinai next Friday.  Hoping both can pass but trying not to get our hopes up.
